Engineering & financial structuring

For third-party projects, ENERGY33 applies the same integrated engineering and financial approach we use to develop and invest in our own projects. Acting as a development and execution partner, we structure each project with an owner’s perspective — selecting the right technology, maximizing profitability, achieving bankability, and managing execution through completion.

How we choose

Start with the resource. Work backwards. Make it economically viable.

We start with the energy resource available at the site and work backwards to determine the technology and configuration that can extract the greatest economic value from it. That means looking beyond the obvious solution to identify energy that might otherwise be wasted — associated gas being flared, exhaust heat that can be recovered for steam or cooling, or pressure differentials that can generate power instead of being dissipated through a valve.

At Ocultún, associated gas that had been flared at the wellhead is treated and converted into electricity. At Carbocoque and Coquecol, heat previously vented from coke ovens was evaluated for recovery to generate 35 MW of power. Villanueva and Puerto Carreño use plantation-grown biomass that is replanted as fuel. In Guatemala, both phases of the Ocultún project use domestically produced natural gas to displace more carbon-intensive generation from coal and heavy fuel oil on the national grid.

Because ENERGY33 has worked across a broad range of generation technologies and equipment manufacturers, we are not tied to a particular solution. We evaluate alternatives based on efficiency, reliability, capital cost, operating cost, and overall project economics, then integrate the optimal technical solution with the financial structure needed to make the project economically viable and bankable.

Our experience spans reciprocating engines, gas and steam turbines, boilers, combined-cycle systems, cogeneration, waste-heat recovery, solar, and battery storage. We have worked with equipment from manufacturers including Wärtsilä, Caterpillar, Jenbacher, Guascor, Waukesha, MTU, MAN, Hyundai, STX, Siemens, Solar Turbines, GE, Pratt & Whitney, Nebraska Boiler, Thermax, ISGEC, Shin Nippon, and Triveni.

40.5 MW of self-generation for one of LATAM's largest copper mines

Ecuador's power shortages have pushed large industrial consumers to secure their own generation for the hours the grid cannot serve them. This plant is what keeps Ecuacorriente mining through those interruptions.

ENERGY33 led the financial, technical and legal structuring and operates the plant. Power Solutions N.V. supplied the equipment, installation and commissioning. The plant was built within months of the site becoming available.

After its first year, Ecuacorriente extended the arrangement by a further 16 months — taking committed service past two and a half years.

Flared gas turned into 13 MW, displacing coal and heavy fuel oil

Built at City Petén's production facility, the plant runs on associated gas — gas that comes up with the oil and was previously flared. Treated on site and burned in engines, it displaces the coal and heavy fuel oil that has long covered a share of Guatemala's generation.

ENERGY33 led development — financial, technical and legal structuring, and the coordination that held the partnership together. City Petén supplies gas from Ocultún. VPower Group supplied the generating equipment and runs operations and maintenance.

The plant entered the spot market in April 2024, was classified an Efficient Firm Energy Plant that June, and began its 15-year AMM contract in May 2026.

A 15 MW expansion, won on Guatemala's PEG-5 tender

ENERGY33 and City Petén were awarded a 15 MW expansion at Ocultún under Guatemala's PEG-5 public tender, on a 15-year term with supply beginning May 2030.

The expansion follows the ramp in City Petén's gas production from 6.5 toward 23 MMSCF per day. Taken together, the two phases will put 28 MW into the Guatemalan market from gas that would otherwise be flared.

The plant will be installed in 2028; the 15-year contract begins on 1 May 2030. In between, the output is sold into the spot market — the same sequence we ran at Ocultún I, which sold spot from April 2024 before its AMM contract began in May 2026.

Our design underpins the largest wood biomass plant in Colombia

Colombia generates most of its power from hydro, which leaves the grid exposed whenever El Niño brings a long dry season. Biomass runs at availability factors above 85%, so it delivers the firm renewable capacity that wind and solar cannot.

ENERGY33 performed the conceptual engineering for Refocosta, prepared and managed the bid process, negotiated the EPC contracts and supported the bank financing — work that turned a project that was not viable as originally conceived into a bankable one. The EPC contract was signed; COVID then stalled the project, and Refocosta partnered with EDF to complete it.

The plant is owned and operated by Refoenergy Villanueva, a joint venture of EDF Power Solutions and Refocosta. It was commissioned in October 2025 as EDF's first operating power plant in Colombia.

Fuel comes from eucalyptus plantations grown specifically for the project and replanted on a three-year rotation, so the carbon released on combustion is recaptured by the next crop.

27 MW STX cogeneration — our second contract for the same client

Three years after delivering the 8.5 MW plant, Park Energy came back to us for a project three times the size. Repeat mandates from an industrial client are the clearest evidence that the first one went well.

ENERGY33 managed the full engineering scope — conceptual, basic and detailed — and coordinated the civil, mechanical and electrical contractors through installation and commissioning.

The plant now runs in parallel with the 14.9 MW cogeneration facility our founders built in 2006 and the 8.5 MW Hyundai plant we delivered in 2022 — three generations of plant at one site, 50.4 MW in total, all engineered by the same team.

Puerto Carreño sits on the Orinoco at the Venezuelan border, far from Colombia's national grid. The town had been buying its electricity across the river. This plant ended that dependence with power generated from plantation wood grown a few hours away.

ENERGY33 performed the conceptual engineering, prepared and ran the EPC bid process, negotiated the contracts, supported the bank financing, and acted as owner's engineer through construction to commissioning.

8.5 MW for Green Valley Industrial Park — installed in eight months

Park Energy supplies electricity, steam and chilled water to the multinational textile, automotive, apparel and light assembly tenants of Green Valley Industrial Park. They needed more capacity, fast.

The plant itself was a Hyundai unit previously installed in Panama, disassembled and shipped to Green Valley. ENERGY33 prepared the conceptual, basic and detailed engineering to retrofit it into its new location, and coordinated the civil, mechanical and electrical contractors through installation.

It runs in parallel with the 14.9 MW cogeneration plant our founders built on the same site in 2006. Park Energy returned in 2025 for a second, larger contract — the 27 MW STX plant above.
